Great
River Medical Center, Burlington, Iowa
-- world's largest water source geothermal
system. |
The system that heats and cools this medical
facility, which opened April 1, 2000,
utilizes the largest lake loop ever built
for a geoexchange system, with a
capacity of 1,600+ tons. 650,000 sq. ft. of
hospital and office space are served with
650 water-to-air heat pumps of various
sizes. Nearly 85 miles of polyethylene
piping rests below the surface of a 12-acre
man-made lake to provide the geoexchange.
Heating, cooling and air conditioning is
being provided at a cost of $0.25 per square
foot per year, which is one-fifth the
national average for hospitals, with an EER
of 17 to 19. |
